چکیده

conducted at the University of British Colombia. These studies have used the gradual fill methods proposed by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) in an attempt to further clarify aversion associated with carbon dioxide. We have contacted the authors of this work and understand that they will also be responding to Dr Wood’s letter. Therefore, we will leave the discussion of these proposed methods and their findings to them. Finally, in the absence of conclusive evidence in Dr Wood’s letter, we are not convinced that he is correct in concluding (stated as his belief) that euthanasia of laboratory rodents with carbon dioxide is humane. We feel that this conclusion fails to take into account the wealth of literature supporting the aversiveness of carbon dioxide. We refer to the use of carbon dioxide as an ‘accepted’ pain stimulus in pain studies involving humans and other species (Thürauf et al. 1991, Komai & Bryant 1993, Peppel & Anton 1993, Danneman et al. 1997). Therefore, when all of this information is taken into account, the balance of evidence does seem to indicate that carbon dioxide is not a humane method of euthanasia. We also feel that until conclusive experimental evidence can be provided that carbon dioxide can be used humanely, the only humane action is to stop using carbon dioxide to induce unconsciousness and death in animals in the currently accepted protocols.

Carbon Dioxide Use for Euthanasia of Laboratory Animals

The literature on the use of carbon dioxide for inhalation euthanasia of laboratory animals can be considered separately for rodents and poultry. It discusses measurement of aversion to carbon dioxide at different concentrations and with different methods of use, the importance of user training and the variation amongst existing international guidelines. Recent literature recommends the use of ...

Ambiguous Tipping Points∗

We analyze the policy implications of aversion to Knightian uncertainty (or ambiguity) about the possibility of tipping points. We demonstrate two channels through which uncertainty aversion affects optimal policy in the general setting. The first channel relates to the policy’s effect on the probability of tipping, and the second channel to its differential impact in the preand post-tipping re...

Aversion to nitrogen and carbon dioxide mixtures for stunning pigs

Inhalation of concentrations greater than 30% of carbon dioxide (CO2) by volume in atmospheric air causes aversion in pigs. The objective of this study was to assess, using aversion learning techniques and behavioural studies, the aversion to three alternative gas mixtures of nitrogen (N2) and CO2: 70% N2 and 30% CO2 (70N30C), 80% N2 and 20% CO2 (80N20C) and 85% N2 and 15% CO2 (85N15C). The exp...

Risk aversion and CO2 regulatory uncertainty in power generation investment: Policy and modeling implications

Our simulation considers producers in a competitive energy market. Risk averse producers face uncertainty about future carbon regulation. Investment decisions are a two-stage equilibrium problem. Initially, investment is made under regulatory uncertainty; then the regulatory state is revealed and producers realize returns. We consider taxes, grandfathered permits and auctioned permits and show ...

Welfare specifications and optimal control of climate change: an application of fund

The sensitivity of the optimal control of carbon dioxide emissions to the specification of the social welfare function is systematically explored using the FUND model. Increasing risk aversion emphasises climate change damages relative to emission reduction costs, but at the same time increases the discount rate of consumption. Without international co-operation, the discount rate effect domina...
